United star Alan Smith backs fashion show

TOON captain Alan Smith is backing a charity fashion show – and has even promised to sign up some of his players for the catwalk.

Smith will be guest of honour at the glitzy show at nightclub Tup Tup Palace in Newcastle on Sunday night, but says he is too shy to walk the runway himself.

The event, which will feature both new and vintage designs, is raising cash to help send a group of North East adventurers on their toughest challenge yet.

Cafe owner Mark Stewart, Rob Cameron and photographer Simon Greener, are setting off for South India in January.

They will compete in Enduro India 2010 – a gruelling 11-day ride across the ancient trading routes of the country on the backs of classic Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles.

When asked about the journey Simon Greener said: “We all enjoy motorbikes and biking and so it seemed like a good way of raising money for charity and at the same time seeing some fabulous parts of India.”

Show organiser, Carmel Hutchinson, was contacted by the bikers to help set up a fun fundraising event.

She said: “The boys involved wanted to raise money, I organise fashion based events at Tup for various charities so I was asked if I’d put together one for this cause.

“To do an event which benefits three charities is a first for me and knowing that this fashion show will be raising money for several charities gives me more of a push to make sure it’s well attended and therefore make more money for each of them.

“There are going to be three shows from local designers Era Vintage, Between the Buttons and Kate Fearnley, who has dressed Girls Aloud and the cast of Hollyoaks.”

The involvement of the Newcastle United players is going to be a great boost to the event.

Mark Stewart said: “Alan is a regular in the café in Jesmond and after chatting with him I found out he also had quite a passion for motorbikes.”

He has recruited the catwalk talents of his teammate Steven Taylor to model some of the vintage clothing.

When asked about India’s notorious reputation for road safety, he said: “That’s one of the main attractions of the trip, that and the fact that we will all be riding Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles – it’s going to be quite rough and ready.”

The trio are raising funds for Unicef, The Rainbow Trust and The World Wildlife Conservation Society, and hope Sunday night’s show will prove a welcome boost to their coffers.

Tickets for the fashion show are £10 on the door with the models taking to the catwalk at 7pm.

Smith plays despite agony from tooth surgery
« Result #6 on Nov 28, 2009, 1:14pm »

Hi I found this article. Its a long one but at the bottom it mentions Smith so I have just copied and pasted the relevant bit!
Poor Smith!

“The club belongs to the fans. I know I’m just a small part of it. I think what the supporters want is to see a team that’s trying and a team that’s winning. That’s what they’ve got - even if it is in a division that they don’t want to be in.”

Alan Smith typified the spirit by playing in the win over Preston despite being in agony after having tooth surgery hours on the morning of the game.

He has fully recovered ahead of the visit of Swansea today.
