Doncaster Rovers overcame Leeds United 1-0 to win the League One play-off final and leave The Whites’ promotion dream in tatters.
Rovers started the Yorkshire derby brighter than their opponents, James Coppinger bursting beyond the Leeds defence only for some fine goalkeeping from Casper Ankergren preventing the former Newcastle United man from giving his side the lead.
James Hayter was the next Doncaster player to penetrate the Leeds backline, but Ankergren was there once again to slide in and knock the ball away from his opponent.
Gary McAllister’s men began to find their feet in front of 41,000 Leeds fans, with home-grown midfielder Jonathon Howson going close with a long-range effort which sailed just inches over the bar but as the sides went into the interval they remained deadlocked at 0-0.
With many fans still returning to their seats, Doncaster took the lead through the lively Hayter who beat his marker to head home from a corner after just two minutes of the second half.
Leeds pressed for an equaliser, with Howson firing just over Neil Sullivan’s goal from twenty-yards out while Jermaine Beckford also went close from a tight angle.
The Whites’ dominance in possession still saw them struggle to create any clear-cut chances after some sterling defending by Seaon O’Driscoll’s side, and as Andy D’Urso drew processions to a close the Doncaster players threw themselves to the floor in celebration.
Their heartbroken opponents slumped to the turf as they saw their promotion hopes finally extinguished, adding to the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion having been deducted fifteen points at the beginning of the season by the Football League.
Promotion into the Championship is a remarkable achievement for Doncaster side who, five years ago, were competing in the Conference. They will now look forwarding to competing for a place among English football’s elite from next season.
